Today, we learned what foods contained starch. The foods that we used were peanuts, dried apples, coconut, egg whites, flour, granola bar, dried onion, and rice. The foods that tested positive for starch were rice, flour, coconut, and granola bar.

We did our vocabulary for Chapter 6 in Nebraska History. In Nebraska History we are learning about the Oregon Trail.

Have a great night!

~ The Cool Fourth Graders :)

In Science we are learning about Food Chemistry. Today, we did a test to see if the liquids contained starch. We tested water, cornstarch, corn syrup, corn oil, and milk. Iodine was the testing material. Cornstarch was the only liquid to test positive for starch.

Have a great night! ;)

Miss Maucher and the awesome Fourth Graders

Sorry, it has been so long since I have updated the blog! We have been very busy in the fourth grade classroom. We are preparing for the State Writing Assessment. The students are doing an awesome job of creating some interesting stories. We had the privilege of having Mrs. DiGiovanni in our classroom yesterday, to present a lesson on “What makes Good Writing.” It was AWESOME!

Mr. Alexander even shared in our “Thinking Culture” lesson last week and it was fun to have him participate and share his thoughts.

On a side note, I encourage every student to ask more questions while in class, not only in discussions, but also on their assignments.Have a great week!~ Miss Maucher

I have just added the link for the U.S. States Practice game that I used in class today. It is found under the links on the lower right side of the page.

*This is a reminder that all assignments are due to me by 3:30 PM on Friday, December 18, 2009.

I am very proud of my fourth graders! The whole class did very well on the Unit 3 Language Arts test! :)

We are getting ready to build Gingerbread Houses to help raise money for our field trip to Minden and Kearney. We are selling the raffle tickets to other Eisenhower Elementary students 1 for 50 cents or 3 for a dollar. We are very excited to build the houses are Friday, December 11!

December Book Orders are due Monday, December 7th. You can also order online. Books make great stocking stuffers! ;-)

I can’t believe that it is December already! Where did the time go? I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I have posted the spelling words for this week on spellingcity.com. Please encourage your student to practice their multiplication and division facts at home. If you have a concern, please make sure to let me know. We have three weeks left in the quarter; this means three weeks left to meet AR goals! Have a great week! :)

 Reading

We are just starting to read Charlotte’s Web in reading class. I am working hard to incorporate the “thinking culture” into my reading class. If you hear your child talking about journaling and questioning this is coming from the new idea in the school district and our school building. We are using journals to record summaries and important/unimportant questions we may have about the story. The students are learning how to determine the importance of a question they have while they are reading.

Spelling

This week’s spelling words come from the book. I have put the list on spelling city. Thank you to the parents who tried ordering the books off of Scholastic.com. Please let me know what you thought of ordering online.

 Math

We are learning how to construct line graphs. The students have already learned about bar graphs and circle graphs.

 Language Arts

We are learning about poetry and how to construct graphic organizers. Science

We are working on our Motion and Design unit. Today we learned how to still make a car effective, but more cost effective.

Nebraska History We are going to be starting research projects involving PowerPoints on Native American tribes in Nebraska. I am very excited to start this adventure in my classroom. I was very pleased with the results from the Chapter Four test. Great job! :)

Odds and Ends

Thank you to the parents who tried ordering the books off of scholastic.com. Please let me know what you thought of ordering online. If your child is sick, please feel free to pick up the homework in the office. I am more than happy to have it ready or to send it home with a sibling.

Have a great week!

~Miss Maucher

Miss Maucher

I want to welcome all of my new fourth grade students to my class! You should have all gotten your letters. I am very excited to start the school year. I am looking forward to learning more about each of you. Please make sure to ask questions if you do not understand what we are learning about in class.
